About Alzheimer's

Understanding & Caring For Your Loved One

At Qualicare Home Care Calgary, we understand how overwhelming it is to be the primary caregiver for someone with Alzheimer's. If your loved one has been recently diagnosed, you might be feeling confused and unsure where to start with care.

As the disease progresses, the person you once knew begins to fade away. It can be difficult as a family member to see this, which is why one part of our process is to provide support and respite care for family caregivers. We put together an informational guide on understanding Alzheimer's and dementia, along with care tips.

What Is Alzheimer's?

Alzheimer's is a type of dementia that can affect an individual's memory, thinking and behaviour. Alzheimer's is progressive and can eventually get to a point where it affects an individual's ability to complete daily tasks. Dementia is a general term that describes memory loss or loss of cognitive abilities that can impede an individual's ability to live independently. Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, accounting for about 60-80% of all cases.

Does Everyone Get Alzheimer's As They Age?

Alzheimer's is not a normal part of old age; however, the risk factor increases with age. It is not a disease that can only happen to older people; many people under 65 experience early-onset Alzheimer's. As Alzheimer's is progressive, catching it early and starting treatment can slow the symptoms from getting worse. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's, but treatment has shown its ability to slow progression. Treatment for Alzheimer's is meant to improve the quality of life for people living with Alzheimer's.

How Can I Spot It?

The easiest way to spot Alzheimer's is to pay attention to symptoms developing in your loved one. The most common symptom of Alzheimer's is difficulty remembering information that they've just learned. Typically, Alzheimer's starts in the part of our brain that processes new information and affects learning. If you find that you, or your loved one, is starting to show symptoms of memory loss or disorientation, confusion, mood or behaviour changes, you should see a doctor at your earliest convenience.

Specialized Home Care

Let Our Caregivers Help

Caring for someone with Alzheimer's can become an increasingly difficult task, especially when they are family. Due to memory loss and abrupt behaviour and mood changes, it can be a tremendous mental and emotional strain for the primary caregiver. When acting as a family caregiver, it's essential to take care of yourself and take breaks to recharge and avoid caregiver burnout.

You may feel that putting your loved one in a facility is the only option and that they can provide better and more comprehensive care than you would be able to. However, with Qualicare Home Care Calgary, you can choose to keep your loved one comfortable in their own home while receiving excellent home care services. Whether you need a full-time caregiver or just part-time help, Qualicare Home Care will match you with a compatible Care Expert.

Especially with dementia, where the affected individual may be easily confused, moving them to a facility can be difficult for them to understand. Allowing them to stay in the home they're familiar with, along with seeing the same Care Expert consistently, helps them feel comfortable and safe.
